The Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) comprises of three main buildings – the Main Terminal Building, the Contact Pier, and the Satellite Building.
The KLIA airport’s site spans 100 square kilometres. The development plan includes the construction of Main Terminal and one Satellite Terminal, and two full service runways, sixty contact piers, twenty remote parking bays with eighty aircraft parking positions.
Main Terminal Building
The Main Terminal Building is located in between the two runways. The floor area of the terminal covers 390,000 square metres and the building consists of 39 square roof units.

Contact Pier
The Contact Pier is an extension of the main terminal building with gates marked with prefix A and B for Domestic departures, G and H for International flights.

Satellite Building
The 176,000 square metres Satellite Building accommodates International flights departing and arriving at Kuala Lumpur International Airport. Passengers can travel to the Satellite Building via the Aerotrain.

The Kuala Lumpur International Airport is designed with the ultimate capacity to handle 100 million passengers per year. It is the primary airport serving Kuala Lumpur and the surrounding Klang Valley region.
In 2017, the KLIA handled 58,554,627 passengers and 710,186 tonnes of cargo. It is the major hub of Malaysia Airlines, MASkargo, AirAsia, AirAsia X, Malindo Air, flyGlobal, UPS Airlines and AsiaCargo Express.
The KLIA is one of Asia’s major aviation hubs and it was designed using the ‘Airport in the Forest, Forest in the Airport’ concept, in which it is surrounded by green space.
KLIA Main Terminal Building
The Main Terminal Building covers 390,000 square metres and the Departure Hall and Arrival Hall are located at this building.
This abstract symbolic architecture by the late Kisho Kurokawa encompasses the Islamic geometry and cutting edge technology with the tropical rainforest in mind.
The five-storey Main Terminal Building provides comprehensive airport facilties and services for the convenience of the passengers.
The departure drop-off areas is located at level 5 of the Main Terminal Building.
Level 5, Main Terminal Building
The Level 5 at the Main Terminal Building is the Departure Level at the KLIA. The following is a layout plan for level 5 of the MTB.
A total of 216 check-in counters, located in 6 different islands, identified by the letters A – M (excluding I). Multi check-in services designed for the use of all passengers arriving, departing or in transit are available.
The entrance for Departures is located almost the end of this building and you will use the escalator to go down one level for your boarding gate.
The passengers will walk toward the immigration and customs checkpoint for security clearance.
Proper document check is conducted at the Immigration counters before the passengers boarding their flight at the boarding gate.
Shortly after the document check at the Immigration counters, passengers will proceed to the customs checkpoint for security clearance.
The Contact Pier is just a short walk away after the customs checkpoint.
You will find the gates A, B, G, H at the Contact Pier.
Level 4, Main Terminal Building
The Level 4 at the Main Terminal Building is allocated for Airlines’ offices and a food court serving local favourites and international choices.
The public food court, known as Food Paradise, is available at this level for food and beverage.
You can enjoy a good view of the facilties and services at the level 3 while dining at this level.
Level 3, Main Terminal Building
The Level 3 at the Main Terminal Building is the Arrival Level at the KLIA. The following is a layout plan for this level 3.
After getting off from the flight, the passengers will then walk a short distance from the arriving gates. If they are at the Satellite Building, they can take the Aerotrain from Satellite Building to the centre of the Contact Pier.
For the passengers who are on schedule for flight transfer at KLIA, the Transfer counters are located at the Contact Pier for assistance.
If you need a quick transfer to klia2 terminal, the information counter for help on transfer between klia2 and KLIA is available.
The Contact Pier is located on level 4 so arriving passengers will go down one level for connection to level 3 for security clearance and baggage reclaim.
Proper document check is conducted at the Immigration counters before the passengers exiting the terminal.
Passengers proceed to collect their luggage at the baggage reclaim area. A monitor is setup above each belt showing the flight served by the carousel.
On the way to the Arrival Hall, the ticketing counters for taxi services and train services are available for passengers who need a taxi to their next desination.
At the arrival hall you will find a useful Tourism Malaysia office, a Celcom stand and Digi kiosk selling prepaid SIM cards for your mobile phone and a counter for several car-rental firms.
Various faculties and services are available at level 3 of the Main Terminal Buiding.
Level 2, Main Terminal Building
The Level 2 at the Main Terminal Building is connected to the Car Park facility and the walkway to the Sama-Sama Hotel.
The car park facility is connected to level 2 of the Main Terminal Building.
Pedestrian bridge is available to connect passengers between the Main Terminal Building and the car park building.
Passengers who plan to use the ERL train service can follow the overhead signboard to go the boarding platforms of ERL train.
The KLIA ERL station is located on Level 1 of the Main Terminal Building.
The station consists of a single island platform, with both KLIA Transit and KLIA Ekspres services using the opposing sides of the platform.
Level 1, Main Terminal Building
The Level 1 of the Main Terminal Building houses the bus services and ERL train Services.
For the ERL train services, you can opt for KLIA Transit or KLIA Ekspres train to go to your next destination.
The ticketing counters and boarding plaftorms for the KLIA ERL station is located at this level.
The KLIA Ekspres train uses the Platform A, while KLIA Transit train uses the Platform B.
The buses available at the KLIA bus station can accommodate travellers with convenient and affordable transportation option to different destinations.
KLIA Contact Pier
The Contact Pier is the rectangular-shaped terminal that is connected to the Main Terminal Building.
It is an extension of the Main Terminal Building with gates designated with prefix A and B for Domestic departures, G and H for International flights.
The Contact Pier handles Domestic traffic, regional International flights and International flights routed to other hubs within Malaysia.
At the north side of the Contact Pier, it can only accommodate narrow-bodied aircraft whereas the south side of the Contact Pier can accommodate Boeing 737 and Boeing 747 or similar sized aircraft.
Contact Pier, International Level
The Contact Pier is the rectangular-shaped terminal that is connected to the KLIA Main Terminal Building.
It serves as the Domestic terminal for Malaysia Airlines and some International flights are handled here too.
The Aerotrain station is located at the center of the Contact Pier to transfer the passengers between the Contact Pier and the Satellite Building.
The Contact Pier is located on level 4.
The arriving passengers will go down one level to level 3 to complete the security clearance and collect their luggage.
The Contact Pier accommodates gates marked with prefix A and B for domestic departures, G and H for international flights.
There is a wide array of duty-free shops and prestige brand boutiques at the Contact Pier for the passengers to complete their shopping of souvenirs and gifts.
Contact Pier, Domestic Level
The Domestic Level at the Contact Pier accommodates the Domestic departure gates and a variety of retail outlets.
The Malaysia Airlines has been operating most of its Domestic operations out from this level.
The entrance to the A and B gates can be found near the Aerotrain station.
The Domestic flights are accessible from Domestic Departures on Level 3 where passengers descend after security check.
KLIA Satellite Building
The Satellite Building, measured at 176,000 square metres, accommodates International flights departing and arriving at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA).
The passengers have to travel between the Contact Pier and the Satellite Building via the Aerotrain.
The Aerotrain is fully automated and driverless. When the train reaches the platform, the exit doors will open first for passengers to disembark, after which the entrance door on the other side will open.
The Satellite Building features a natural rainforest in the middle of the building, exhibiting the Malaysian rainforests.
Satellite Building, Passenger Level, Level 1
The level 1 of the Satellite Building accommodates the Aerotrain station, the International departure gates and a wide array of duty-free shops and prestige brand boutiques.
The Aerotrain station is located at the West Zone.
The ride of the Aerotrain between the Main Terminal Building and Satellite Terminal takes about 2.5 minutes.
The gates in Satellite Terminal have the prefix C. There is a total of 27 boarding gates at this Terminal.
Within the Satellite Building, wireless internet (Wifi) is provided free of charge.
The terminal also has prayer rooms, showers and massage service. Various lounge areas are provided, some including children’s play areas and movie lounge.
The terminal also features a natural rainforest in the middle of the terminal, exhibiting the Malaysian forests.
This natural forest creation has made the KLIA the first and only airport in the world to receive the United Nations’ Green Globe 21 certification for the airport’s commitment to environmental responsibility each year since 2004.
Satellite Building, Mezzanine Level, Level 2
The level 2 of the Satellite Building accommodates lots of Airport lounges such as Cathay Pacific Lounge, Emirates Lounge, MAS Golden Lounge, Plaza Premium Lounge, Royal Orchid Lounge, Silver Kris Lounge, and Thai Royal Silk Lounge.
The passengers can find a variety of airport lounge available for rest and relaxation at this level of the Satellite Buiding.
The level 2 also houses food and beverage outlets such as Burger King, Starbucks coffee, Delifrance and many others for the convenience of the passengers.
