This page explains the information on baggage requirements and specifications plus common FAQs when you are travelling with AirAsia’s flights.

Note: The baggage measurement gauges at the airport can be used to determine if your cabin baggage fits AirAsia’s cabin baggage policy. You may want to check out the AirAsia’s guidelines on your luggage.
If actual baggage weight is less than the pre-booked weight, fees paid are non-refundable.
You can save on baggage charges by pre-booking baggage online at Airasia website during the your booking process.
Effective from March 15, 2018, travellers departing from klia2 will be able to use the newly-installed Self-Bag Drop (SBD) facilities. Read more on how to utilise the facility in just a few simple steps.

CABIN BAGGAGE
Each guest is allowed one piece of cabin baggage AND 1 laptop bag OR 1 handbag on-board. The main cabin baggage shall not exceed 56cm x 36cm x 23cm and does not weigh more than 7kg.
This baggage should also be able to fit under the seat in front of you or the overhead compartment.



Specification of One Cabin Bag and One Small Bag

You’re only allowed one piece of cabin bag on board that must not exceed 56cm x 36cm x 23cm including handles, wheels and side pockets.
In addition to that, you may carry one piece of laptop bag, handbag, backpack or any other small bag that must not exceed 40cm x 30cm x 10cm.
This item must be able to fit under the seat in front of you.

Important notice: The total permitted weight for two (2) pieces must not exceed 7kg. Multiple items that are strapped, wrapped or tied together will not be counted as one piece of cabin baggage.
Cabin baggage allowance for infants and children
Infants below the age of 2 years are not allocated any cabin baggage allowance. Children age 2 years and above will be given the same allocation of cabin baggage allowance as mentioned above.
When travelling with infants or children, your prams, strollers and buggies cannot be brought on board but can be checked in for free. Any form of child car seats must also be checked in but will be part of your purchased checked baggage allowance.
Need to carry more?
If your cabin baggage is overweight, oversized or exceeds the allowed quantity, you’ll need to check in them in at the airport counter. Airport checked baggage fees apply.
In cases where you are at the boarding gate and you do not meet our cabin baggage policy, AirAsia will need to check in your cabin baggage. This will incur a gate baggage fee. Find out more on the complete list of fees and charges.
Carriage of liquid, aerosols and gels on International flights
For security reasons, certain restrictions have been introduced to limit the amount of liquids, aerosols and gels (LAG) that guests may include in their cabin baggage on international flights.

- LAG items such as drinks, creams, perfumes, sprays, gels and toothpaste must be in containers that have a maximum capacity of 100 ml/mg.
- All LAG containers should fit comfortably in a transparent re-sealable plastic bag.
- Each passenger is limited to only one transparent re-sealable plastic bag with a volume no greater than one litre and dimension no larger than 20 cm x 20 cm.
Medication and food for special dietary requirements including baby food are permitted in your cabin baggage in a reasonable quantity for your flight. They must be declared and may be subject to additional security checks.
LAGs that do not meet the regulations will be disposed.
The following items are allowed to be included in cabin baggage

- Medicines – Quantities that are essential for your trip. Eg. Diabetic kit.
- Baby food – Pastes and liquids that are required for your trip
- Non liquid cosmetics – Solid deodorants, lipstick, powder foundation.
- Fresh/Frozen seafood or meat – Must be packed properly.

FAQs on Cabin Baggage
Q. Can I take infant formula / food in my cabin baggage?
Yes, however, you are only permitted to bring sufficient amount for the duration of the journey. Please take note of the restrictions imposed on liquids, gels and aerosols by the airport authorities.
Kindly be advised that AirAsia has no restrictions on handcarry of expressed breast milk, however different airports have different levels security screening and it will be solely up to the security officer to allow or restrict. it would be advisable to express breast milk inside the departure lounge.

Q. Can I carry cremated human remains (ashes)?
Yes, you may. Cremated human remains (ashes) are permitted, they can be carried on board as cabin baggage or they can be checked-in.
The ashes must be kept in an urn and you must have a copy of the death certificate and the cremation certificate.
Please be advised that further searches/checks may occur at Airport Security.
Ashes are allowed in addition to one item of cabin baggage but they must be kept out of sight from other guests.

Q. Can I carry my wedding dress in the aircraft cabin?
Yes, you can. However, AirAsia does not have any storage facilities on board to hang or store items.
Your wedding dress must be properly packed to fit AirAsia’s cabin baggage dimensions and must not exceed 7 kg. Otherwise, it should be checked in.

Q. Is fresh produce or frozen seafood accepted onboard?
AirAsia and AirAsia X: Frozen seafood and fresh produce cannot be accepted as checked baggage.
However, Frozen seafood and fresh produce may be accepted as hand carry baggage, subject to the destination’s Quarantine regulations.
Provided that such items are properly packed to AirAsia’s satisfaction and meets the cabin baggage weight and size limitations, if dry ice is used to carry these items (in cabin baggage), then a maximum of 2.5 kg of dry ice per guest is permissible in the cabin.
Acceptance of such items is at AirAsia’s discretion and AirAsia reserves the right to refuse carriage.

Q. Can I bring my own food or meal on board?
AirAsia does not allow outside food and beverages on the aircraft.
For safety reasons, any form of self-heating meals / Meals Ready-to-Eat (MREs) or beverages with Flameless Ration Heater (FRH) are banned on all AirAsia’s flights and are not allowed in either checked or cabin baggage.

Q. Am I permitted to use any electronic items onboard the flight?
For safety reasons, during take off and landing AirAsia forbids the operation of electronic equipment onboard AirAsia’s aircraft.
Such items include but not limited to, cellular phones, smart phones and tablets, laptop computers, portable recorders, CD players, electronic games or transmitting devices such as radio-controlled toys and walkie talkies. Operation of hearing aids and heart pacemakers are permitted.
You may use your laptop after the captain has completed take off, but for all other equipment please check with AirAsia’s friendly cabin crew if you are unsure.

Yes, but only hand held bouquets are allowed as cabin baggage.

Q. Is the smoking and carrying of electronic cigarettes allowed on the flight?
Smoking in any form, including electronic cigarettes is prohibited on all AirAsia and AirAsia X flights.
Electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) is not allowed in checked baggage. It can be carried in the cabin baggage but you’re not allowed to use them onboard.

CHECKED BAGGAGE
The Checked baggage can be pre-booked at a discounted rate online or standard rate at the airport check-in counters. Avoid all the hassle with cabin baggage policy by pre-booking your checked baggage allowance and enjoy even more savings on Pre-booking Checked Baggage Allowance.
Each checked baggage must not exceed 81cm (H) x 119cm (W) x 119 cm (D) and 32kg in weight.

Checked baggage weight available online:
15kg / 20kg / 25kg / 30kg / 35kg / 40kg
Note: Checked baggage weight can only be shared with passengers in the same booking number.
Each single item has to weigh less than 32kg and is subject to occupational health and safety requirements.
Baby buggies / prams / strollers and other mobility devices can be checked in for free!

Checking-in Bags
All baggage must be checked-in at the airport:
- At least 45 minprior to departure time for all AirAsia flights (AK / FD / QZ / PQ / JW flights)
- At least 1 hourprior to departure time for AirAsia X flights (D7 flights)
Baggage Check Thru
Your bags are automatically tagged to your final destination with AirAsia FLY-THRU (connecting flights) service.
Excess Baggage
Guests checking in baggage which exceeds the pre-booked allowance will be charged on a per kg basis based on AirAsia fee schedule.
Alternatively, guests may also purchase 15kg baggage at the check-in counters.
Musical items
Smaller musical items such as a guitar, cello, violin or viola which exceed AirAsia cabin baggage dimensions provided it is within 7kg may be carried in the cabin if a seat for it has been reserved and the appropriate fare paid.
There is no baggage allowance associated with the purchase of an extra seat.
Self-Bag Drop (SBD) facilities
Beginning from 15 March, 2018, the travellers departing from klia2 will be able to use the newly-installed Self-Bag Drop (SBD) facilities at luggage drop counters at the klia2’s Departure Hall.
To get the travellers be more familiarized with the new facility, friendly and professional personnel are on duty to assist the travellers.

DUTY FREE PURCHASES
Duty-free items purchased at the airport will not form part your cabin baggage allowance provided it is within the duty free allowance of your destination country.
Items need to be packed in a Security Tamper-Evident Bag, remain sealed and accompanied with proof of purchase until your final destination.
All other purchases including free gifts from duty free outlets will count as part of your cabin baggage allowance.

These duty free shops at the klia2 accommodate more than 200 brands and 4,000 products across fragrances & cosmetics, skincare, fashion & travel accessories, toys, confectionery, local delicacies and souvenirs categories.

Important notice:
Regulations regarding the carriage of duty-free items may vary depending on each airport operator’s policies. If unsure, please check with your local duty-free store personnel.
SPORTS EQUIPMENT
Here is the information on checking-in and transporting the sports equipment.
Each checked baggage must not exceed 32kg

- Domestic: 15kg / 20kg / 25kg / 30kg / 40kg
- International: 20kg / 25kg / 30kg / 40kg
Note: Any number of pieces is allowed with a combined weight not exceeding pre-book/airport weight and excess baggage fee applies to every extra kg.
(A) Sports equipment accepted by AirAsia
The following items will be charged with a sports equipment fee. All other sports equipment will be under the checked baggage allowance.
The sporting equipment fee can be either pre-booked at a discounted rate online or at a standard rate at the airport check-in counters.
Golf
- One bag (maximum 14 clubs)
- A dozen balls
- An umbrella
- One pair of golf shoes
Surfboards
Your surfboard must not exceed 277 cm / 109 inches in length.
Diving
- One scuba regulator
- Tank harness
- Tank pressure gauge
- Face mask
- One pair of fins
- Dive suit/vest
- Bottle
- Buoyancy control device (BCD)
- Snorkel
- Weight belt
- One empty cylinder tank
Note: High intensity diving lamps and normal portable diving lamps i.e. torch lights , which contains rechargeable lead acid batteries, spillable or non-spillable will not be accepted on board AirAsia aircraft as check-in nor as hand baggage as it falls under Dangerous Goods Regulation.
Bicycle
Must be properly packed in a recognised bicycle bag or in a protective box/bag or in a plastic wrap.
Whilst most bicycle bags comply with the standard dimensions, AirAsia will accept all single bicycle bags.
Bicycles that are not packed in a bicycle bag or in a protective box/bag or in a plastic wrap will be refused. Only one (1) bicycle can be checked in per guest.

(B) Sports equipment accepted as checked baggage
The following equipment are accepted as part of your check-in baggage.
Angling/Fishing
Fishing equipment can comprise of rods and reels contained in a case and one bag with fishing tackle, landing net and fishing boots.
Archery
You can bring one bag containing one bow, one quiver and your arrows.
Cricket
You can bring one coffin/bag containing bats, wickets, pads and balls.
Hockey
You can bring your hockey equipment in a standard team kit bag not exceeding maximum baggage dimensions. Your bag can contain sticks, balls and pads.
Lacrosse
You can bring one equipment bag containing lacrosse sticks.
Ten pin bowling
You can bring one non-rolling carry case containing bowling balls and shoes.
Tennis/Badminton
You can bring single or multiple racket kit bag containing your rackets and balls/shuttle.
Water skiing equipment
You can bring one water skiing bag containing one pair of standard water skis or one slalom water ski.
Windsurfing equipment
You can bring one windsurfing bag and the surfboard must not exceed 277cm/109inches in length.
All other sporting items
The following items should not be packed in sporting travel cases:
- Sport clothes
- Sports hold-alls and bags
- Smaller items or accessories such as football shin-pads
Sports equipment not accepted
Due to large sizes and handling complexities, certain sporting equipment may not be able to go through airport baggage systems or fit in the aircraft hold and thus the following equipment will not be accepted for carriage:
- Hang gliders
- Sails
- Kayaks, canoes and oars
- Pole vaults
- Javelins

- Weapons such as antique firearms, swords, knives and similar items provided that such items may be allowed as checked baggage at AirAsia absolute discretion for very special reasons
Restricted items
You may not carry the following items into the security restricted area and in your hand luggage:
- Any Firearms & Weapons
- Pointed/edged Sharp Objects
- Blunt Instruments
- Explosives and flammable substances
- Chemical and toxic substances
- Knives (including hunting knives, swords, and pocket knives)
- Scissors and any other sharp/bladed objects (e.g. ice-pick, nail clippers) considered illegal by local law
- Weapons such as whips, nan-chakus, baton, or stun gun
- Toys guns/gun shaped items or look-alikes, hand-cuffs
- Sporting equipment such as baseball/cricket bats, golf clubs, hockey sticks, billiard cues
- Devices with spillable batteries
- Aerosols (hair sprays, perfumes, medicines containing alcohol) not exceeding 0.5KG/L per article and 2.0KG/L in total weight
- Baby strollers
- Any other items which are deemed security hazards by local law
- Any other items that resemble or have similar functions to the above items
This list is not exhaustive and other items may be included. AirAsia reserves the right to confiscate any item deemed as a threat to the safety of AirAsia guests.
Apart from items on above list, some airports may have added restrictions. To ensure you comply by the rules always check with the airport before you fly.
At the public concourse of klia2’s Departure Hall, there are 4 islands with a total of 128 Common User Passenger Processing System (CUPPS) check-in counters, identified by alphabets S, T, U, V, W, X, Y, and Z. There are also 55 self-service check-in kiosks and lots of seating areas.


The check-in and luggage drop counters are divided into 8 rows located in 4 islands, each row identified by the letters S – Z.

The check-in counters will be opened three hours before scheduled departure time, and will be closed one hour before scheduled departure time.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Q. How do I upgrade my baggage allowance?
You may purchase additional baggage allowance online or at the airport. Save more when you pre-book baggage online before departing to the airport.
Should you wish to upgrade from a 20kg checked baggage to 25kg or more, this can be done via My Bookings or AVA up to 4 hours prior to scheduled departure time or even at the airport check-in counter.
Each guest can purchase up to 40kg per way, per person. Should you have 40kg or more of checked baggage, AirAsia recommends that each checked baggage should not exceed 32kg.
Any guest exceeding their personal checked baggage allowance will be charged for excess baggage at the prevailing rate on the day of travel. Excess baggage charges are quoted and billed in the departure country’s currency.
The pooling or sharing of checked baggage allowances is only allowed for those who are travelling on the same itinerary (booking number) and conduct baggage drop / check-in together.

Q. What items will be carried free of charge as checked baggage?
Baby strollers / buggies / prams, wheelchairs, mobility devices, crutches and walking frames can be carried free of charge as checked baggage provided they are being used and/or an infant, child, elderly, disabled person or a wheelchair user that is travelling.
Otherwise, a checked baggage allowance must be prebooked.
These items, except for wheelchairs or mobility devices with a battery, may be used until the boarding gate before they are checked into the hold of the aircraft.
Depending on the airport you arrive at, the pushchairs/strollers/prams can be either made available at the bottom of the steps, outside the aircraft door or at the baggage carousel.

Q. Can I bring my wheelchair on board?
Wheelchair / mobility devices that have no battery:
Wheelchair / mobility devices that have no battery are allowed as Unchecked Baggage*.
Note: For flights to / from US, AirAsia may have to check in your wheelchair as Checked Baggage if there are more than one wheelchair on the flight and wheelchair service shall be provided until arrival at the destination.
You may continue to use your wheelchair up to the aircraft door/ passenger steps after which it must be given to AirAsia’s staff to be loaded in the aircraft hold.
AirAsia strongly encourages you to check in your wheelchair and use the one provided by AirAsia as some countries have strict health and safety regulations that do not allow staff to lift heavy items. Please refer AirAsia’s guide to pre-book Special Needs.
Wheelchair / mobility devices that have a battery:
Wheelchair / mobility devices that have a battery shall be checked-in. AirAsia accepts battery operated wheelchairs and mobility devices, but please review the FAQ page for further information.

Q. Can I bring my own oxygen device or other medical equipment onboard?
Portable medical electronic devices can be used during all phases of flight provided that it does not interfere with the aircraft electrical, navigational, communication equipment or poses any safety hazard to the aircraft and the cabin occupants.
The following are allowed on AirAsia’s flights:
- Mobility aids and devices that have no battery (for example, canes or walking frames) are allowed as Unchecked Baggage.
- Mobility devices with batteries. For further battery information, please see the FAQ page and review the battery-powered sections.
- For flights to / from US, wheelchair / mobility devices that have no battery are allowed as Unchecked Baggage. If there is more than one wheelchair on the flight, AirAsia may have to check your wheelchair in as Checked Baggage and wheelchair service shall be provided until arrival at the destination.
- CPAP machines and POC are allowed subject to batteries satisfying certain criteria. For further battery information, please check the FAQ page and review the battery-powered sections.
The following are not allowed on AirAsia’s flights:
- Passengers who are traveling in a stretcher or an incubator.
- Passengers who need medical oxygen during the flight.
AirAsia is not able to accept guests requiring a continuous flow of oxygen during the flight therefore you will not be able board AirAsia’s flight.
You will not be able to bring your own supply of oxygen as guests are strictly not permitted to bring any medical equipment or devices onboard which contain oxygen cylinders / bottles.
Passengers with specific requirements requiring special assistance and Passengers with medical conditions / illnesses including those that may require administering or carrying medication / syringes on board are requested to contact AirAsia via its live chat or AirAsia’s call center 48 hours before the scheduled flight departure date to make a prior arrangement for the type of special assistance required.
As security screening at airports is outside AirAsia’s control, guests should at all times carry a Doctor’s letter confirming your need to carry such item / devices on board the aircraft.

Q. Can I bring my pet / animal / guide dog on board?
AirAsia’s standard policy is that AirAsia does not accept any pets / animals on board AirAsia’s flights.
Exception on flights operated by AirAsia India (i5 flights) and AirAsia Japan (DJ flights) where service animals are permitted on board. Please contact AirAsia by selecting “Support” at www.airasia.com for more details on travelling with service animals.

Q. What happens to my baggage if I have an onward flight with AirAsia?
AirAsia operates on a point-to-point basis, or a per sector basis.
This means onward flights are considered as separate journeys, or separate sectors. Therefore, you need to claim your baggage from your first sector flight and re-check them in for the subsequent flight.
You will have to go through immigration check (if arriving from an international sector) and must check in again at the check-in counter to obtain your boarding pass.
In this context, AirAsia will not be held responsible for the consequence of any delays experienced while flying AirAsia.
If you have purchased a “Fly-thru” flight then kindly ensure that your baggage is checked in all the way through to the final destination during checkin for the 1st leg of your flight and you should proceed to the transfer counter upon arrival at the transit station.
Example Bali-Kuala Lumpur-Gatwick, Bali will be the 1st leg, Kuala Lumpur will be the transitting station and Gatwick will be the final destination. This only applies if you have purchased a “Fly-thru” otherwise what was stated in paragraph above applies.

Q. How do I pack sports equipment? What are the fees?
For guests travelling on AirAsia flights departing to and from Australia (except i5 and DJ) flights, if you have a surfboard to check in, simply turn up at AirAsia check-in counters and AirAsia’s friendly staff will assist you with your one (1) complimentary surfboard check-in up to a maximum weight of 15kg.

The most convenient way would be to pre-book Sports Equipment online. You can pay the sports equipment fee upon check in at the airport counter but it will be more expensive and limited to 15kg.
If you pre-book online, you can select from various Sports Equipment weight tiers: 20kg, 25kg, 30kg and 40kg. These Sport Equipment fees are typically slightly higher than regular Baggage fees as it includes a handling fee.
Any other sporting equipment (that is not stated earlier) is accepted as part of the baggage allowance and you can just purchase normal baggage allowance for that.
