AREA expansion area and infrastructure are among the factors contributing to the increase in construction costs of low-cost carrier terminal (LCCT) klia2, the Dewan Rakyat was told today.
Deputy Transport Minister Datuk Abdul Rahim Bakri said several revisions were made to the original klia2 construction plan based on new requirements following the drastic expansion of the low-cost airline industry.
"Among others, the project construction revision of klia2 – managed by Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB) – will increase the original terminal area from 150,000 sq metres to 250,000 sq metres.
"Apart from that, there were requirements from airlines to increase passenger capacity to 45 million and building another 4.4km runway (making it three runways) as well as the need to upgrade facilities of the Department of Civil Aviation and a comprehensive security control system," Abdul Rahim said.
Abdul Rahim was replying to a supplementary question from Tony Pua (DAP-Petaling Jaya Utara) seeking clarification from the government on the increased cost of construction for klia2.
The latest estimated cost for klia2 project is RM4 billion compared to the original estimate of RM2 billion when the project began in 2009.
On the progress status of klia2, Abdul Rahim said as of Sept 13, 61.92 per cent of the project was on schedule and it is expected to be completed by next April, in accordance to the commitment by the implementing contractor.
Abdul Rahim also dismissed a proposal to build another low-cost carrier terminal as klia2 was capable of meeting future demand.
"The current LCCT has now exceeded its capacity of 15 million passengers as it is handling 17 million passengers thus the need for klia2.
"By 2020, we are projecting 33 million passengers … and at the moment based on the upgrading by the government, klia2 can accommodate 45 million passengers," he said in reply to a supplementary question from Datuk Idris Haron (BN-Tangga Batu).
